Brandon McMillan Shares His Expertise in "Lucky Dog Lessons"

Published:

Is it possible for pet owners to turn their dogs into a model companion in just seven days?

Brandon McMillan, celebrity dog trainer and Emmy-Award winning host of the CBS show “Lucky Dog,” believes so—and he has proven it too. Each week on “Lucky Dog,” McMillan rescues an untrained, unwanted, “unadoptable” shelter dog. In the days that follow, the dogs learn to trust McMillan, master his seven Common Commands and overcome their behavior problems—ultimately becoming well-mannered pets and even service dogs.

Last year, Pet Product News went behind-the-scenes on the set of “Lucky Dog” to see McMillan’s training in action. During our visit, McMillan worked with an attentive but sometimes-rambunctious flat coat retriever named Dakota. McMillan taught him how to “retrieve, hold and return” a training dumbbell. The PPN team was amazed to see Dakota’s transformation as he gradually mastered his training objective.

PPN’s glimpse behind-the-scenes was helpful to understand how McMillan trains; however, his book “Lucky Dog Lessons” offers even more insight on his seven Common Commands.

In the book, McMillan shares the knowledge he has gained working with thousands of dogs of every breed and personality to help readers turn their own pets into well-trained Lucky Dog graduates. He begins with the basics—building trust, establishing focus and control, and mastering training techniques.

From there, McMillan explains his playful, careful and kind approach to training the seven Common Commands he teaches every dog: sit, stay, down, come, off, heel and no.

Next, McMillan provides solutions to common canine behavior problems, including house training issues, door dashing, chewing, barking and common mealtime misbehaviors. “Lucky Dog Lessons” includes easy-to-follow steps, photographs to demonstrate each technique, and tried-and-true tips and tricks that dependably work on dogs of almost all breeds, personalities and ages.

Throughout the book, McMillan shares inspiring stories about his favorite students and gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at the show and some of his most unique and challenging canine encounters, including some never-before-seen outtakes.

McMillan will be at PPN’s Global Pet Expo booth 5945 on Wednesday, March 21, from 2-4 p.m., where he will sign copies of his book “Lucky Dog Lessons” and take photos with attendees. The first 25 attendees will receive a free copy of “Lucky Dog Lessons.” Copies of the book will also be available to purchase.
