How Two Pet Retailers Prepped Their Stores for the Holidays

The ho-ho holiday season is upon us—and with it, shoppers’ quests for the best gifts for their loved ones has begun. With that in mind, Pet Product News reached out to two of our 2018-2019 Retailer of the Year Award winners to see how they celebrate the season in their stores. 

At Healthy Pet Products, which has locations in Pittsburgh, a successful holiday display is all about placement within the store, said owner Toni Shelaske. 

“My lead display table was successful because it is dead center when you walk in the front door,” she said. “Obviously, it’s also eye catching with the bright colors, and the triangular shape of the display pulls you into it.”

Meanwhile, Santa is popular during the holidays, particularly at the malls in which Cool Dog Gear’s three stores are located. However, the company, which has teamed up with mall management in the past for pet portraits with Santa after hours, is taking a different approach to its holiday events this year. 

“We have a new and exciting plan—without using Santa,” said Sue Hepner, co-owner of Cool Dog Gear. “Each store has a different winter photo backdrop. We have sent out e-mails, Facebook, Instagram, etc., posts inviting people to come to our stores for free photos, encouraging them to collect all three designs.”

During the fall, all three Cool Dog Gear locations used the same backdrop for autumn portraits, and Hepner said the staff is expecting the holiday photo backdrop to increase foot traffic this year. 

“We have had a lot of positive feedback from our pet parents,” Hepner said. “We’re expecting lots of pups to visit our stores during the holiday season.”
