NatGeo WILD’s Dr. K Speaks on the Synergy Between Vets and Retailers
With the rise of veterinarian-focused reality TV shows, from “The Vet Life” on Animal Planet to “The Incredible Dr. Pol” on NatGeo WILD, veterinary care of dogs and cats—and some cows, pigs and other farm-dwelling animals—is well documented these days in the media. However, for viewers with an interest in animals other than typical cats, dogs and farm animals, there’s “Dr. K’s Exotic Animal ER,” which airs at 9 p.m. on Sunday nights on NatGeo WILD.
The show follows a bustling South Florida-based practice owned by Dr. Susan Kelleher—otherwise known as Dr. K. The menagerie of beloved pets that are in Dr. K’s care range from ferrets, hedgehogs and bearded dragons to marsupials, primates and fish—“everything but dogs and cats.” No two days are quite alike for Dr. K and her team, who triage, evaluate, diagnose and treat an almost mind-boggling array of species, many of whom come in with acute illnesses and injuries. The show also offers viewers tons of teachable moments in which the practice’s vets touch upon important points about the health and care of exotic animals.
The June issue of Pet Product News will feature a Q&A with Dr. K in which she talks about her role as an educator of exotic pet owners, her thoughts on the potential synergy between veterinarians and the pet product and retail industry, the exotic species that are most in vogue these days, and products she recommends.
In the meantime, Pet Product News has a clip from the upcoming April 15th episode of “Dr. K’s Exotic Animal ER,” in which Dr. K reflects on the intense surgeries she performed that day and coping with patient loss. Watch it now on our Facebook page.
