New Jersey Pet Shop Owner Bets on a Store Makeover to Keep Sales Increasing

Published:

While many of her peers have begun adding an e-commerce option to their operations, Jan Hopper, owner of Living Pawsitively in Lafayette Township, N.J., says her store is not considering to do so at this point in time. Plus, she shares which products are trending in her store.

Pet Product News: Tell us about some of your special services and events.

Jan Hopper: We partner with adoption groups and do special events with them, most recently pictures with Santa. We will be having a doggie fashion show in the spring and also pictures with the Easter Bunny. In June each year, I have a Wellness Day with 20-30 vendors. They educate customers on their products. We also have an adoption event that day. I have groomers trimming nails for customers and an agility group showing their dogs in action.

PPN: What are the top-selling products in your store right now?

Hopper: Right now, the top-selling product is Pet Releaf’s cannabidiol (CBD) oils and treats. I researched them before I brought their product in my store. Their tag line is “from seed to sale, from plant to pet.” A very transparent company. I have repeat customers who see a huge improvement in their pets’ well-being. It’s an amazing product for pets with arthritis, seizures and anxiety. I have been selling their product for over a year now and believe it is one of the best, if not the best.

PPN: What are your favorite products right now?

Hopper: I just brought in the Hero toys from Caitec. They are extremely durable. I love their functionality. They have many different fetch toys as well as treat toys to keep pets occupied.

PPN: What industry trend have you been keeping your eye on most closely?

Hopper: I have been watching online sales with other stores. At this time, we do not have e-commerce. I feel it does not affect my sales.

PPN: What business challenge are you currently in the process of tackling?

Hopper: The only challenges I am experiencing is obtaining good, dependable employees.

PPN: What business goal are you hoping to achieve in 2019?

Hopper: I am enhancing (updating) the interior of my building. I am adding all-new industrial-type shelving in my pet food area. It will complement the log-type building I own.

I keep increasing my sales every year, so I have a goal to keep that momentum going.
