PIJAC Joins the AMR Challenge to Combat Antibiotic Resistance
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens the world’s progress in healthcare, food production, and even life expectancy, and it affects both humans and animals. The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) recently joined the AMR Challenge, an initiative being led by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to address antibiotic resistance around the globe. The AMR Challenge calls on governments, private industry and civil society to commit to taking actionable steps that further our progress in combating antibiotic resistance.
PIJAC and the broader pet care community are working to develop and establish Recommendations for Judicious Use of Antimicrobials in Companion Animal Care. This document will address antimicrobial use and connected subjects in an effort to codify best management practices that will encourage responsible stewardship while protecting human and animal health and well-being. In addition to these recommendations, PIJAC and our allies will produce educational materials and provide outreach and education to the pet care community and the general public. They will seek to partner with related programs and organizations to maximize the effectiveness of our outreach efforts.
PIJAC has sought input from leading voices in the pet care community, spoken with breeders and animal handlers, as well as animal health experts, regarding disease prevention strategies, vaccination protocols, hygiene practices and routine health monitoring. They have convened town hall meetings at Global Pet Expo and SuperZoo this year to increase awareness and stakeholder engagement as well as solicit input from retailers, manufacturers and distributors on their own stewardship practices.
As PIJAC works to develop these industry-wide best management practices, we want to hear from you. Please reach out to Savonne Caughey email@example.com or Mike Bober firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss ways in which you can get involved in this important effort.
