PIJAC Will Cover Multiple Legislation Issues at Aquatic Experience Town Hall Meeting

World Pet Association

On Friday, Nov. 3, the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) will host its annual town hall during the Aquatic Experience, which is being held Nov. 3-5 in Schaumburg, Ill. We will have industry experts discuss PIJAC’s cyanide poisoning study, the state of the Hawaii fishing trade and other important issues.

The Hawaii ornamental fishing trade has been turned upside down by the state Supreme Court’s decision that the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) must comply with the Hawaii Environmental Policy Act (HEPA). The high court’s decision may effectively shut down fishers until an assessment is conducted and reported.

A lower court’s decision last week doubled down on this decision, saying that fishers would receive no injunctive relief. The high court’s decision will stand until licenses are granted, which means all fine mesh fishing licenses are invalid.

PIJAC has been working closely with fishers, scientists and others to address the situation. We have joined the court case on the side of the State of Hawaii and on behalf of the fishers and are seeking to resolve the HEPA issues. The cost of our efforts in the court case, and in seeking a resolution to the HEPA requirements, are expected to run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars—and we need your help.

We are asking everyone in the pet trade, or who enjoys having an aquarium, to contribute. We also ask that you and your fellow pet care professionals join PIJAC. Your help is desperately needed!

PIJAC’s town hall will also include discussions about statewide white lists, a PIJAC-funded study examining the detection of cyanide in wild-caught fish, and various national and international regulatory issues. The town hall will take place in the Nirvana B&C at 6:15 p.m.

Robert Likins is the director of government affairs for the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC). PIJAC is the legislative and advocacy voice for the responsible pet trade.
