Attract Customers with Assortment During Holiday Shopping Season

For pet stores, variety in product and price are key for broader consumer appeal this time of year.

I cannot believe the holiday season is upon us! Are you ready? Floors packed to the max with fun, unique, gift items? Plenty of winter wear in the colder regions? Treats, especially in cute gift-giving packaging? And toys, toys and more toys! And don’t forget some pet gifts for humans too—jewelry, household items, clothing, picture frames, ornaments and so much more!

Assortment in product and price are key for broader consumer appeal. It’s great to stock some $5 to $10 impulse items as stocking stuffers; keep a few at the register to entice customers as they check out. But higher-priced, unique items are a must-have for the discerning pooches and their owners.

Make your stores fun, festive and inviting.

Make your stores fun, festive and inviting. Host events and parties. Run weekly specials, promotional ads, raffles—anything that can draw even more people into your store. Make sure your displays are exciting and full so they draw the customer to them and make them want to buy. If they are inviting, you will have a better chance of selling multiple items. The sky is the limit! Use your creativity!

This also is the time of year to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. One option is to create gift baskets by category—a toy basket, a treat basket or a combination basket. Small, well-priced baskets will sell quicker, but you also could do a few larger baskets too for those spoiled fur babies.

Meet with your food vendors and request samples of some of your key-selling foods or treats. Ask vendors for discount coupons as well, or create your own coupon if customers buy during January. Then create gift bags with an assortment of the food and treat samples tied in a bow to give to customers. They will be excited to get a little “gift,” and perhaps they will find a new favorite for their pet while boosting your future food sales. It’s a great way to expand your food sales.

The holidays aren’t just about pleasing our pets—bring in animal-related gifts for humans.

Only sell items for the animals themselves? The holidays aren’t just about pleasing our pets—bring in animal-related gifts for humans. Ideally, find local craftsman and artists to see if they have any pieces that are animal oriented. Having unique, one-of-a-kind craft items are always appealing, and it will support local craftsmen. No one local? Do a quick online search to find some artists on Etsy or online. I have found many fun, special items for my house and yard by scouring the Internet. If you need some assistance with places to look, just send me an email. Research the NY Now (formerly the NY Gift Show) website for other resources.

And of course, there are many manufacturers that offer pet-related items.

E&S Imports is a well-established wholesale dog products company offering an endless array of dog-breed items for humans and their homes. You name it; they’ve got it—dog frames in multiple sizes, mugs, tumblers, key chains, note holders, note pads, pens, pencil holders, figurines, tee shirts, book marks, iPhone covers, mouse pads, magnets plus an extensive assortment of various holiday items and ornaments. To see the the full assortment, visit esimports.com.

Need great stocking stuffer to offer your customers? Doggie Chicken Chips by Kennelmaster Foods are an all-time favorite of many pups, including mine! U.S.-sourced premium chicken tenderloin is dehydrated to lock in goodness and flavor. Light and crispy, like a crunchy potato chip for dogs, these single-ingredient treats use no preservatives, additives or fillers. Only 2 calories each makes them a great healthful option at treat time or for training as they easily break them into smaller pieces. And don’t forget the kitties—they love these yummy treats too.

Doggie Chicken Chips are offered in three sizes, and the smallest is a great introductory size for first-time users or for gift giving. Check out the company’s introductory starter case offer. It offers a variety of the three sizes, as well as samples to allow new retailers to determine their customers’ demands. And just in time for the holidays, you don’t want to miss out on the company’s holiday promotion—10 percent off a case (48) of the small-size bags with Christmas labels (see photo). If you purchase the starter kit, you can request the special holiday labels for the smaller bags in the kit. Learn more at doggiechickenchips.com.

So get those creative thinking caps on and get ready to take off. Happy Thanksgiving! Cheers!
