There’s Still Time to Make the Most of Holiday Sales

Just a few days left and it will be a distant blur. I hope your holiday season so far has been wildly successful. Although we are just a few days away from the big day, if you find yourself running short on product, there is still time to get a few last minute items to fill in—and if you’re lucky, at a promotional price.
If you work with a distributor, it could be your best contact source. Distributors often have items they can ship out immediately, and might have some last-minute specials to clear out of inventory. If you don’t see any, ask! Sometimes they do not publicize every special, so they might have something up their sleeves. And if they don’t have any specials, they could offer you something just because you asked.
The same goes for some of your key vendors, especially those with holiday-specific items. Just like for you, it’s the end of the season, so if they don’t sell now, they might be stuck hanging onto product until next year. They too might have specials to move the inventory now to make room for new product. If you call and currently there are no specials, make sure to ask them to put you on their email list for when they do have them. You don’t want to miss out on any last-minute opportunities or even options for promotional items for next year’s season or even Christmas in July specials. While talking to your vendors, don’t forget to see if there are any great deals on products that are timeless and worth boxing in your stockroom as promotional items for next year’s offerings or pre-season promotions.
Now also is the time to survey your store for inventory voids and to look for slow-moving or stale items in your product mix. If a product is not selling, then it is time to drop the price, or in some cases even slash it low and clean out. Moving these items now gives you the opportunity to replenish with fresh, new product and start the new year off with a bang. Do some housecleaning now during busy season and clear those underperforming products out. You can even do holiday promotions such as a free gift with purchase for any purchase over X amount of dollars.
East Coast retailers might want to evaluate their positions with winter items. With this year’s unseasonably warm weather, don’t get caught with extra stock that you thought would move with the onset of the cold weather that so far has not come. Better to do some promotions now for the holiday just in case the winter stays very mild.
