5 Pet Franchises Honored on Entrepreneur Magazine’s 2018 Franchise 500

Published:

Five national pet business franchises, including Pet Supplies Plus and Petland, recently landed coveted spots on Entrepreneur magazine’s 2018 Franchise 500 list.

More than 1,000 companies applied to be ranked, making it the magazine’s most competitive year yet, according to Entrepreneur officials. To be eligible to rank, a franchisor must be seeking new franchisees in the U.S. or Canada and must have had a minimum of 10 units open and operating as of July 31, 2017, with at least one franchise located in North America.

In conducting its annual rating of franchises in the world, Entrepreneur considers numerous factors including financial strength, stability, growth rate and size of the franchise system. Other rating factors include number of years in business, length of time franchising, start-up costs, litigation, percentage of terminations and whether the company provides financing. An independent CPA firm audits financial data. Every company with verifiable data receives a cumulative score. The franchises with the highest cumulative scores become the Franchise 500.

Pet Supplies Plus, a neighborhood pet store, moved up 17 places to rank 32nd on the list. With 11 new franchisees added in 2017 and expansion into three new states, Pet Supplies Plus opened its 423rd store last year and expects to open at least 50 more stores in 2018.

“Over the last 30 years, Pet Supplies Plus has focused on growing our company through establishing a proven path for successful franchising, offering a supportive corporate team and competitive royalty fees,” said Chris Rowland, CEO of Pet Supplies Plus, which has headquarters in Livonia, Mich. “We’re excited to have moved up in the ranks of Entrepreneur’s 2018 Franchise 500 and are thankful for our dedicated franchisees who continue to make this possible.”

Pet Supplies Plus welcomes driven entrepreneurs to join its front-running team, said company officials. Franchisees come from all different professional backgrounds including working for Fortune 500 companies, for the military, as multiconcept franchise owners looking to expand their business profile and as people looking for an active retirement plan. The company is also in the process of transitioning strong independent pet store owners to Pet Supplies Plus owners, which will allow them to still run their own business but with more support and effective systems, according to the company.

Pet Supplies Plus is focused on expansion in neighborhoods all over the country, seeking qualified franchise partners to develop its presence in Colorado, Texas, Florida, Virginia, California, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

Dogtopia, a dog day care and boarding services provider, placed in the top 250 spots this year, ranking 205 on the list.

At Dogtopia, dogs enjoy an open-play environment with protective rubber flooring to ease joint wear and tear. With an emphasis on education, exercise and socialization for dogs, Dogtopia aims to offer pet owners the assurance of leaving their furry family members in the hands of trained professionals in an environment created with the safety of dogs in mind. Dogtopia’s fees are all-inclusive, with meals prepared according to each pet owner’s request.

With more than 65 locations across North America, the brand is now the largest provider of specialty day care in the U.S., according to company officials, and will continue expansion by franchising with successful entrepreneurs.

Pet retailer Petland ranked 209 overall on the list. According to World Franchising Network, there are more than 4,000 active franchisors in North America.

“We are honored to be recognized by Entrepreneur magazine as one of the top 500 franchise concepts in the United States,” said Joe Watson, president and CEO of Petland, which has headquarters in Chillicothe, Ohio. “Petland is proud to be your neighborhood pet store with stores around the world. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and success of our franchisees and the continued relevance of the Petland brand and proprietary operating model.”

Petland is a franchise operation with quality, full-service retail pet centers across the U.S., Canada, China, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil and El Salvador. The first Petland in Saudi Arabia will open in spring 2018.

Aussie Pet Mobile, an Australian company founded in 1996, ranked 359 on Entrepreneur’s list. The company moved its global headquarters to the U.S. in 1999, and it now has franchises throughout North America, as well as Australia, Canada, Ireland, Greece and Cyprus. Franchisees offer dog and cat grooming services, including washing and drying as well as nail trimming and brushing, inside specially designed vans that come to customers’ homes.

Finally, Wag N’ Wash Natural Food & Bakery, a full-line specialty retail destination for cats and dogs, just cracked the top 500, ranking 465 on Entrepreneur’s list. With a mission to recognize, promote, and foster the positive impact that companion pets and their humans have on each other, Wag N’ Wash provides fresh-baked dog treats, natural food, supplements, full-service grooming and self-wash facilities, and toys. Today, there are 14 Wag N’ Wash locations throughout Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, New Jersey, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington.
