Animal Welfare Groups Team Up to Support Organizations Aiding Pets Following Hurricanes Harvey and Irma
In light of the many pets and pet owners impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, special grants are now available to local nonprofits and government agencies helping companion animals in the affected areas. The grants are being made available by a collective of national animal welfare organizations, including A Kinder World Foundation, Houston PetSet, Petco Foundation, Petfinder Foundation and PetSmart Charities.
Beginning Sept. 12, disaster-impacted groups can submit one grant application through a centralized website—AnimalDisasterFunding.org—to be reviewed jointly by A Kinder World Foundation, Houston PetSet, Petco Foundation, Petfinder Foundation and PetSmart Charities. The grants are open to animal shelters, rescues, sanctuaries, food banks, animal hospitals and government agencies that assist pet owners or pets.
To be eligible for these grants, applicants must be based in the U.S. or a U.S. territory, directly affected by Hurricanes Harvey or Irma or be providing emergency relief in response to these historic storms at the request of an Agency Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Applications from organizations that self-deploy or are based outside the vicinity of the affected geographic areas will not be considered. The specific needs of each applicant will determine the total amount of funding received.
The grantmaking collaborative was established to streamline the funding application process and allow local groups to spend more time helping animals in crisis as opposed to seeking funding. Each grant application will be reviewed by the five grantmakers, and the review process will be expedited so that urgent funding can be provided immediately.
Residents along the coasts of Texas and Louisiana are still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Harvey and, now, Irma, which has brought significant rainfall to the southeastern U.S.
U.S.-based groups interested in applying for funding support are encouraged to submit an application via AnimalDisasterFunding.org no later than Oct. 15 for consideration. Applications will be reviewed upon submission.
