Dave’s Pet Food Issues Voluntary Recall
Dave’s Pet Food, based in Agawam, Mass., has issued voluntary recall/withdrawal of approximately 300 bags of Dave’s Simply the Best Dog line of dog food, according to company owner Dave Ratner.
The company also stated that 90 percent of the recalled products were stocked at Dave’s Soda & Pet City stores; all other retailers were notified to pull the remaining products.
Customer supplied date code information and retain samples were pulled, tested and found to have high peroxide values.
“You know if the bag was affected because you open it up and it smells like kerosene,” Ratner said.
The cause of the smell was determined to be bad rice bran in the formula, which has since been discarded at the food’s manufacturing facility.
Product co-packer Southern Tier Pet Nutrition released a statement regarding the recall.
“No outdated materials were used; however, it was noted on a subsequent production run of another product that the rice bran being used had an off odor,” the statement reads.
Affected customers are encouraged to exchange their bags or seek a refund.
