Natural Products Expo West Sets New Record

The 36th annual Natural Products Expo West & Engredea, the world’s largest natural, organic and healthful products event, had another record-setting year with 6.9 percent growth and hosted more than 77,000 attendees. The show had more than 3,000 exhibiting companies, including more than 600 first-time exhibitors. The event, held March 9-13, 2016, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif., was produced by the recently re-branded New Hope Network based in Boulder, Colo.
Despite the overall growth, the section of the show floor dedicated to pet products was noticeably smaller than in years past. Many of the exhibitors were dedicated to natural grocery rather than the independent pet specialty channel, and some of the pet manufacturers opted for booths outside of the dedicated pet aisle.
Tammy Jivery, key accounts, natural and outdoor sales for Zuke’s, which serves both channels, said that both Natural Products Expo West and Global Pet Expo are very important shows for the Durango, Colo., treat maker.
“Zukes has been coming to this show for several years now,” Jivery said. “It is obviously one of the best and biggest in the country, and Zuke’s was founded on the principle of using all-natural, healthful alternatives to produce the most amazing dog treat. So our presence here speaks volumes. We’ve been around for over 20 years, and we pride ourselves on what we put into not only our ingredient deck but our packaging, and being here at this show along with the soft goods, our fellow competitors, the hard goods, really speaks volumes that we’re passionate about what we do and we continue to be passionate—growing and expanding our line every year, coming out with new and exciting things.”
Zuke’s showed its new Zuke’s Puppy and Tiny Naturals, expansions of its best-selling Mini Naturals lineup, at the event. The treats are designed for puppies and small-breed dogs and feature the company’s first bacon inclusion.
Zuke’s was saving its big surprise—Ascent Natural Dog Food, its first pet food product—for Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Fla., which took place the week following Natural Products Expo West.
In addition, San Diego-based The Honest Kitchen, maker of all-natural dehydrated pet foods, supplements and treats, was honored with a NEXTY Award at the expo for its beef bone broth for dogs and cats.
Made from 95 percent beef bone broth plus nourishing parsley, pumpkin and turmeric, the functional liquid treat is a healthful, all-natural source of joint-supporting glucosamine and chondroitin, and contains a potent turmeric extract that has been shown to provide anti-inflammatory health benefits, said Lucy Postins, co-founder and CEO of The Honest Kitchen. By adding warm water, the broth can be served as a liquid treat, poured over kibble or used to rehydrate The Honest Kitchen foods.
“As a human-grade pet food brand, we’re continually influenced and inspired by human health trends,” said Postins. “It’s an honor to be recognized among such incredible peers within the natural products industry, and the camaraderie helps us all push forward spreading health to more families, their pets included.”
