Pet Sitters International (PSI) is ready to celebrate Take Your Dog to Work Day, an event the association created more than two decades ago to celebrate how dogs make great companions and to promote pet adoptions.

Since the inception in 1999, PSI has encouraged employers around the world to open their doors to employees’ dogs for one Friday in the summer. This year, Take Your Dog to Work Day, sponsored by Fear Free Happy Homes, lands on June 21.

Over the years, the celebration has expanded to include other pet types with the entire week leading up to the event (June 17-21) observed as Take Your Pet to Work Week and June 17 as Take Your Cat to Work Day.

“While [Take Your Dog to Work Day] offers a fun opportunity to have dogs at work, its purpose since the inaugural celebration has always been to encourage pet adoptions,” said Patti J. Moran, president of PSI.

Social media has bolstered the observance’s popularity with pet owners eager to share photos of their pets at work, according to PSI officials.

“For years we promoted the campaign through grassroots efforts reaching out directly to businesses and media,” said Beth Stultz-Hairston, PSI vice president and Take Your Dog to Work Day spokesperson. “Now, social media users are our biggest advocates—spreading the word by sharing their photos on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter using the #takeyourdogtoworkday, #takeyourcattoworkday or #takeyourpettoworkweek hashtags.”

PSI offers a free downloadable event toolkit that provides instructions for planning a Take Your Dog to Work Day event, as well as employee participation forms and sample “dogs at work” policy.
