The Future of SuperZoo: A Conversation with Doug Poindexter
SuperZoo gets underway in Las Vegas today. Doug Poindexter, president of the WPA spoke with PPN about the show.
Why do you think the pet category is currently so strong?
I think the pet industry is expanding due to the overall mental shift in pet owners seeing their pets as truly a member of their family. You see people refer to their pets as “fur babies” much more often nowadays. They want to provide more for their pets as they would for a child; especially in terms of higher-quality and all-natural ingredients.
SuperZoo continues to set records every year. In what ways do you see it expanding in the next five years?
Yes, we have been setting quite a few records lately, and expect to set more with this upcoming show! SuperZoo 2015 will have 2166 booths—that’s 266 more than last year. The show will cover 216,578 square feet and is tracking to beat last year’s record of 16,640 attendees. The pet industry should expect great things from SuperZoo in the coming years. We are adding a little bit more of everything and hope to bring an even more dynamic and meaningful experience to attendees with each event cycle. One spoiler: we’ll be expanding the show floor into the two new halls Mandalay Bay is building as we speak.
How important are the seminars and educational components of the show?
The seminars and educational components of SuperZoo University are essential to SuperZoo as a whole. We aim to provide retailers with the resources needed to run a successful business, and that entails more than simple access to the newest products and leading manufacturers in the industry. Our sessions help retailers increase store traffic, strengthen customer loyalty and sell more efficiently, all while providing them with the overall knowledge and training they need to stay ahead of the curve.
Will the WPA expand the amount of education and seminars it offers on using technology?
WPA will continue to explore technology trends and will adapt to include the latest advancements, whether that entails adding more sessions on a new or emerging technology or making sure the sessions we offer are current with the latest research and market trends.
