A giant supermarket chain in the United Kingdom is experimenting with offering pet grooming services in its stores. The idea is one way the store chain is looking at luring back customers.
Like U.S. grocery chains, Britain’s Tesco chain of 6,800 stores is locked in a price war with competitors at the same time that competition is heating up from online retailers.
Now Tesco will do a one month trial with a Pet Den in one of the company’s stores where customers can drop off their dogs to be groomed while they shop. If it is successful they plan to roll out it nationwide. British pet owners – like U.S. pet parents - are spending more on their animals, particularly in terms of pet care.
Tesco’s CEO knows something about the market. Before taking over at Tesco he was chief executive of giant British pet retailer, Pets at Home.
