Wellness Goes for Green, Expands Partnership with TerraCycle
Last year, Wellness Natural Pet Food’s WellPet manufacturing facility in Mishawaka, Ind., diverted 793 tons of waste from landfills, an action that is part of a growing sustainability program at the natural pet food manufacturer’s Midwest plant.
“Our team at the WellPet facility in Indiana is passionate about sustainability and is committed to decreasing our carbon footprint,” said Doug Mitchell, plant director of WellPet, which is headquartered in Tewksbury, Mass. “We’re pleased with the progress we’ve made so far and are prioritizing growing these programs to have even more impact in 2016.”
Additionally, the natural pet food brand announced it has expanded its partnership with global recycling company TerraCycle. As part of the free program, pet owners nationally can recycle their Wellness Complete Health, Wellness Core and Wellness TruFood dry packaging for dogs and cats, either at participating pet food retailers or by shipping their empty pet food bags directly to TerraCycle in exchange for points that can be redeemed for a variety of charitable gifts.
“We’re excited to make more Wellness recipes recyclable with TerraCycle,” said Chanda Leary-Coutu, senior marketing communications manager for Wellness Natural Pet Food. “So far, there are nearly 300 community recycling locations for Wellness packaging at retailers, schools, offices and more, with over 40,000 total individuals participating.”
At TerraCycle, Wellness packaging is shredded and melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make high-quality recycled goods such as park benches and picnic tables.
