Women in the Pet Industry Network (WIPIN), an organization focused on women entrepreneurs and leaders in the ever-growing pet industry, named the five category winners of Pet Industry Woman of the Year.

The winners were selected as the top women in five categories: advocate, corporate, entrepreneur, rising star and solopreneur. From these five categories, twenty-five finalists were chosen. A winner in each category was awarded at the Women In The Pet Industry conference in Portland, Ore., on Sept. 26.

The winners are:

  • Marci Koski of Feline Behavior Solutions, which offers cat training, took home the top prize in the advocate category.
  • Gila Kurtz of Dog Is Good, which makes apparel, gifts and accessories for dog lovers, was named the winner in the corporate category.
  • Candace D'Agnolo of Pet Boss Nation, which helps entrepreneurs become profitable in the pet industry, earned the award in the entrepreneur category.
  • Rebecca Breese of Pet Hub, which makes pet identification products, was the winner in the rising star category.
  • Mona Straub with Just Fur Fun, which offers canine, feline, human and equine hand-beaded accessories, was named the winner in the solopreneur category.

After the individual category winners were presented, one was chosen as the winner overall as the Pet Industry Woman of the Year.

Kurtz, the corporate winner, earned the title of Pet Industry Women of the Year 2017. She is co-founder and co-owner of Dog Is Good, a lifestyle brand for dog lovers.

Dog Is Good creates original designs for a broad array of products including gifts, apparel, accessories and home decor specifically for the human at the other end of the leash. The company sells to wholesale, retail, and licenses the brand to numerous manufacturers in the pet, gift, outdoor retail, resort and home decor industries.

“Gila will be a wonderful representative for women in the pet industry,” Said Shawna Schuh, president of WIPIN. ”She is accomplished, runs a successful brand and will use her talents well in this new role.”
