Abused, Reused … and Environmentally Successful
No longer seen as a quirk of our more extreme nature-loving friends, environmental sustainability has gone mainstream. In fact, 55 percent of global online consumers say they are willing to pay more for products and services provided by companies that are committed to positive social and environmental impact, according to a 2014 study by Nielsen.
Founded in 2004, Only Natural Pet has been on the front lines of sustainability’s rise in popularity and credits its environmental initiatives as having the biggest impact on its consumers’ loyalty and the company’s resulting success.
Cardinal Laboratories Wins the ‘Green’ for Two Years Running
Cardinal Laboratories has been voted the Best Green Company To Work For in a poll conducted by the Los Angeles News Group for the second year in a row. The poll, called Winning Workplaces, asked newspaper readers to vote for the best local companies to work for in the San Gabriel Valley, and Cardinal captured the most nods in the Green Company category.
Cardinal, which makes pet food, treats, shampoos and health products marketed under the Pet Botanics, Crazy Pet, Furrever Devoted, Remedy + Recovery and Viva La Dog Spa brands, touts a mission “to be planet friendly while providing eco-friendly pet products that improve life for people and their pets.” In 2009, Cardinal switched to 100 percent solar power in its Azusa manufacturing and warehouse facilities. The company also installed more energy-efficient equipment and added sensors for lighting automation. The electricity cost savings allowed the company to install air conditioning in its factory and distribution center (which is unusual in California).

Only Natural Pet has used passion, creativity and smarts to develop its extensive sustainability initiatives with a zero-waste strategy at the heart of it all. Throughout its offices and warehouse, Only Natural Pet has ensured that the large majority of trash is diverted to recycling and composting channels.
The most notable of these strategies, and the company’s first priority, is its reuse of shipping cartons. Instead of discarding or recycling the cardboard boxes it receives vendor product in, Only Natural Pet uses them to ship consumer purchases. This seemingly small change saves the company $4,000 per month and also provides an ideal opportunity to educate consumers about its sustainability initiatives—there’s nothing like a battered box delivered with a sweet note to get the point across.
“We know environmental and social responsibility resonates well with our consumer base, so aside from the financial and ethical value, we do it to ensure a sustainable business model for the future,” said Marty Grosjean, founder.
