Q4 FOCUS: Professional Grooming
Spa services and holiday hues can add a sales boost to the busy end-of -year season.

With the fourth quarter here, professional groomers are preparing for a busy season of getting pets ready to be inside more and presentable for holidays and visitors, said Michelle Austin, director of marketing/purchasing for Ryan’s Pet Supplies in Phoenix.
In addition to providing options for holiday-themed accessories, such as bandannas, color-coordinated bows and nail caps, retailers report having an easier time upselling their spa services around the holidays.
“We’re always trying to upsell the spa services year-round, and sometimes that sell is easier during special seasons,” said B.C. Henschen, co-owner of Platinum Paws in Carmel, Ind. “Sometimes trying to push extra services like a mud bath or facial can be easier as a special holiday treat for the pet.”
Creative services and colors continue to be on trend, and Andrew T. Kim, founder and CEO of Healthy Spot, which has several locations in Southern California, reported seeing “more creative styles of haircuts, and Japanese-style grooms have made it close to mainstream.”
Beyond services, groomers report taking advantage of impulse shoppers and the generous season.
PetEdge offers “special holiday-scented shampoos and colognes to add a nice touch, reminiscent of the pleasant aromas of the season,” said Katie Moore, project manager, and Rebecca Bush, assistant product manager. The Beverly, Mass.-based company also offers a selection of nail polish, hair dye, bows and bandanas in holiday-inspired colors and prints for add-on sales.
Pets aren’t the only ones sporting fashionable colors. Grooming facilities are sprucing up the look of their locations.
“We offer some of our equipment in custom colors,” said Katie Rodne, office manager for Groomer’s Best in Brandon, S.D. “This is becoming more popular as groomers are improving the overall look of their shops. When a customer walks in and is impressed with the overall appearance of the shop, they will correspond that to how well their pet is being taken care of.”
Ryan’s Pet Supplies also recognizes the color trend and is introducing a gray powder-coat finish to its Paw Brothers Professional hybrid tub.
PetEdge is launching two additions to its Master Equipment line that keep groomer safety in mind. The Flex Table is an electric grooming table with wheels and casters designed to move easily around any grooming shop, and the Superior Stainless Steel Walk-In Tub is designed to make it easy for large dogs to get in and out of the tub.
Aside from appearance and equipment, experts advise prioritizing staffing and customer service.
“The success of a salon directly correlates to the people you have in place to provide the best possible service,” Kim said. “There is so much opportunity during the fourth quarter; we have always felt these two areas add to ending the year strong.”
