Mars To Buy Greenies’ Maker S&M NuTec

Published:

Rumored to be on the sales block for months, S&M NuTec, maker of Greenies, has been sold to Mars Inc.

While both companies confirmed the sale today neither would disclose details. The sale requires regulatory approval.

Privately held S&M NuTec, of North Kansas City, Mo. was started in 1998 by Joe and Judy Roetheli. The company sold 315 million Greenies in 2005 and the teeth-cleaning treats has been a top seller.

Privately held Mars of McLean, Va., already owns the Whiskas and Pedigree brands. Mars has said in the past that its pet foods are some of its fastest-growing brands.

Mars, which also makes Snickers and M&Ms candies, had $18 billion in sales last year.
