Directory/Buying Guide Summer/Fall 2008

Letter from the Editor

Welcome to the Summer/Fall 2008 edition of the Pet Product News International Pet Industry Directory and Buying Guide.

We are pleased to bring you the most comprehensive, up-to-date listings of manufacturers, manufacturers’ representatives, distributors, breeders, organizations and more than 36,000 products and services.

This research edition of the guide features the State of the Industry report for 2007-2008. Almost 500 independent retailers took the survey to let our readers know how things are going in their businesses, which translates into how things are doing in the pet industry.

According to contributor Angela Davids’ analysis of the survey results, the search for safe dog foods has lead consumers back to their neighborhood pet stores. The sale of dogs and dog-related products skyrocketed from an average $67,800 per store in 2006 to $144,000 in 2007. Dog food made up 26 percent of those sales, compared to 21.1 percent in 2006.

Sales of cats and cat-related products more than doubled, growing from $16,700 per store in 2006 to $35,100 in 2007. Food accounted for 34.6 percent of sales in the cat food category, a jump from 26.2 percent in 2006.

To find more results from the survey, including stats on dog, cat, fish, bird, reptile, small mammal, pond, and grooming products, turn to page 8, for complete coverage of the survey.

We also feature several articles about current trends, including those in dog products, fish and fish-related products and bird products.
We profile the top industry organizations on pages 21-22, and the largest pet retailers are profiled on pages 17-20.

Check out the Corporate Scorecard on page 7, which gives updated information about the pet holdings for those corporations exceeding $1 billion in sales, compiled by PPNI news director Brian Hutchins.

To give you a taste of what is available in our print directory, we have made several feature stories as well as the Corporate Scorecard available online. These stories, which are not available in the print edition, include Trends in Cat Products, Trends in Reptile Products and Trends in Small Mammal Products. Visit our table of contents below for a sampling of what’s included in our print edition. Please note that full listings and contact information are only available in our printed version.

We hope you find useful information within these pages. Please feel free to send us feedback regarding feature articles, listing corrections or additions, and ideas on how to make this book better for your business by sending an e-mail to escholtz@bowtieinc.com.
