Editors' Choice Awards 2009
Congratulations to the recipients of this year’s Editors’ Choice Awards. Our dedicated team of evaluators reviewed hundreds of products that either manufacturers submitted or we viewed at trade shows. Making the final selections wasn’t easy—there were so many excellent offerings—but we are happy to announce 31 products made the final cut. Winners were selected based on innovation, function or design, or a combination of all three.
Augie Brands Inc.
BARKscotti, “the Biscotti for Dogs,” scored big on taste. When our evaluator offered our dog tester—an American Eskimo—a choice between the BARKscotti and another treat, the dog immediately went for the former. The treats come in three inviting flavors: Oatmeal Apple Cranberry, Peanut Butter Carob Chip, and Carob.

ARM & HAMMER Disposable Waste Bags & Dispenser comes with 24 baking-soda and lavender-infused bags to eliminate odors. Ideal for home use or on the go, they’re great for cat-litter pickups, too. The dispenser attaches easily to a leash, bag or belt loop and the bags are larger than many and easy to tie. They’re available in a variety of colors, and refill rolls are available. But let’s be honest: The first thing we noticed was major brand name ARM & HAMMER, and no doubt will many customers. Smart move, Bamboo!

Fart Busters combine yummy taste with a way to prevent dogs’ unpleasant-smelling emissions. After our reviewer had fed the treats to her gas-prone dog for three days, she reported that not only did the dog love the taste of them, but there were “no stink bombs” from him, either. The healthful ingredients are also a plus. The treats are grainless for allergy-prone dogs, contain USDA free-range chicken and include human-grade digestive enzymes to help improve digestion, according to the company.

Bowsers Pet Products
The Buttercup is an eco-friendly pet bed made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. It was so popular with our feline testers that when one cat got up, the other immediately claimed the bed. That it is machine washable and dryable is an added bonus.

Goat’s milk?! That was our reaction too. But Nature’s Dog, a line of all-natural goat’s milk products for dogs, has dog owners talking. And that’s a good thing! Touted as easy to digest, with beneficial proteins, minerals, enzymes and probiotics, goat’s milk is also said to have healing, moisture-rich properties—and not just for humans, but for dogs too! Hats off to Canus for creating a buzz in the pet-health category. Did we mention how cute the shampoo bottle is?

Our evaluator especially liked the DC28 Animal's easy-to-use detachable hose handle and described the vacuum as “strong, sturdy” and “powerful.” She said, “It has done a wonderful job sucking up the matted dog hair out of my rug, which is something our other vacuum has always had trouble [doing].”

The Skinneeez stuffing-free dog-toy line includes five new series: arctic, barnyard, exotic, jungle and hi-flying. Each is made with plush fabric in realistic styles and includes a squeaker—sometimes two. It’s like having distraction, action and comfort all in one toy. And the best thing is, dogs don’t seem to realize it’s a toy, not prey. “My neighbor’s dog, Rocky, carried his new ‘find’ around as if he had just come back from the hunt,” our evaluator said. “He was so proud.” Now isn’t that what toys should be about?
