Dog Breed Bans Explored in Texas

Posted: Tuesday, December 30, 2008, 3:30 p.m., EST

Breed-specific legislation explored in TexasThe issue of enacting laws to ban or regulate pit bulls, Doberman pinchers and Rottweilers in Texas has landed on the Texas state attorney general’s desk. A request for an opinion on whether cities and counties have the power to target certain dog breeds through legislation was made by Republican state Rep. Tony Goolsby in a letter to Attorney General Greg Abbott. Lawmakers are set to consider the topic in the next legislative session in Austin.

Measures commonly known as breed-specific legislation, or BSL, have been proposed in municipalities across the United States. In Sioux City, Iowa, the city council recently voted 5-0 in favor of a pit bull ban.

In Texas, several cities have expressed interest in enacting similar laws, Goolsby wrote in his letter to Abbott. Members of the state’s pit bull clubs, however, oppose BSL and instead are in favor of improvement and enforcement of existing laws. <HOME>

i think that is just wrong t ban a whole breed of dog just cause some of them may have attacked people when prevoked! if that is the logic you are going to use then we have to put a ban on people from iraq an afghanistan they are just as dangerous ! sound stupid right yea think about it people!

If Cesar Milan (Dog Whisperer) owns "Daddy", a pit bull, then that proves these dogs can be controlled.
They are actually Staffordshire Bull Terriers. If you look up European royalty history, guess what dogs were bred to protect the royal children.....
they're great with kids.
We've had 2 around our kids since 1993. NOT ONE PROBLEM!
If you're going to ban a mean dog, ban an ankle-biting chihuhua!!

I think that if you are a responsible owner and you educate yourself as well as your dog, there will be absolutly no problems. I understand that SOME pitbulls have attacked people but NOT all of them are like that it really depends in how you bring up your dog. I think we shouldnt allow out government to tell us which breed we can/cant have
