Pet store chain Petland Inc. of Chillicothe, Ohio, is scheduled to open the first of its newly formatted stores on Dec. 5 in Hillsboro, Ohio. Petland founder and chairman Ed Kunzelman said the new format complements Petland’s traditional offering and allows the company to better serve its customers in areas outside of traditional store markets.
At about 2,500 to 3,500 square feet, the new stores will be smaller than traditional Petland stores, which typically run about 5,000 square feet. The new format stores will also offer grooming services and carry an extensive variety of premium and specialty pet foods as well new Petland cat litter that can be purchased in bulk, according to the company.
The new format will follow Petland’s traditional store model in that it will also sell animals. The Hillsboro location will carry small birds, reptiles, fish, ferrets and other small animals.
“We recognized that we could better meet the needs of all of our customers with offering a smaller store with a heavier focus on consumables and service,” Elizabeth Kunzelman, Petland’s director of communications, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to offer this new format to our customers, and we’ve been welcomed with open arms in the Hillsboro community during our soft opening.”
Elizabeth Kunzelman said the company is currently viewing multiple locations for new format stores. The plan is to open five to 10 franchised stores in the next year, she said.
The Hillsboro grand opening event kicks off at 9:45 a.m. on Dec. 5 and will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, door prizes and visit by Petland’s pet counselor, Safari Stan. <HOME>
