Indiana Bill Targets Exotic Animals
Posted: Thursday, January 14, 2010, 4:30 p.m., EST

Indiana Bill Targets Exotic AnimalsSenate Bill 280, introduced by Senator Jim Arnold on Jan. 11, would require a person who sells at least six “exotic reptiles” in one calendar year to obtain a state permit. In addition, the proposed measure provides penalties for releasing “exotic animals” into the wild.

An “exotic reptile” is defined as a reptile that is not native to Indiana or has been rooted out from Indiana and is either a wild reptile or feral reptile. An “exotic animal” is defined as an animal that is not native to Indiana or extirpated from Indiana and is either a wild animal or feral animal that is not a cat or dog.

If approved, Senate Bill 280 would make it a misdemeanor to sell an exotic reptile without a permit issued by the state department of natural resources. Permits would be valid for one year and fees would be determined by the department. The bill mandates that permit fees not exceed $50.

SB 280 would also make it a misdemeanor to release an exotic animal into the wild without legal authorization or a permit issued by the department of natural resources. Violators would be subject to fines of up to $2,500.

SB 280 currently sits in the Senate Committee on Corrections, Criminal & Civil Matters where it awaits its first committee hearing.

To clarify, this affects the average owner the most. If you are breeding as a business then this is worth the investment. However say someone has two hamsters and they have 7+ babies. Selling them would be a misdemeanor. Managing the states natural resources is a good thing, but unless there is REAL cause for something then their isn't a reason for a new law. This law's intention is to milk money from another source. Nothing else.

An Exotic is anything not native to IN, be it snake, hamster, bird, or fish.

Okay....why would you petition this? So are you breeding for profit? Then pay $50 dollars a year to do this. Fine people that release exotics, ummmm thats a good thing not a bad thing. So if you care about the animals then do not petition. If you are a money hungry breeder that doesnt care for the animals well I hope the up the permit cost on you. This has nothing to do with owning an exotic pet and enjoying exotic pets. This is an attempt to keep breeders under control and discipline breeders that dont follow the rules, and protect animals from being released.

Someone needs to start an online petition that can be signed. Too many people have a lot of things to do to truly fight this. It needs fought and it needs stopped... WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO AMERICA BEING A "FREE" PLACE??? now you have to have so many permits that it is nearly impossible to do anything. START AN ONLINE PETITION TO STOP THIS!!!

I was linked here, I'm not sure what 'non-industry professional' means but I wondered what the best way to voice my disapproval would be?

That said, this bill would be pretty difficult to enforce. Aside from those who make a substantial portion of their income from this trade it would be impossible to prove that an individual has sold more then 6 unless they tried to nail someone each time a sale went down. Then say, oh my bad after the 1,2,3,4,5 and 6th time. This wouldn't affect rehoming fees either.
