Bayer Animal Health to Sell Advantage, K9 Advantix to Pet Specialty Retailers, Internet Sites
Posted: Tuesday, February 9, 2010, 4:07 p.m., EST

Bayer Animal Health to Sell Advantage, K9 Advantix to Pet Specialty Retailers, Internet SitesBayer HealthCare LLC's Animal Health Division plans to start selling Advantage Topical Solution for cats and dogs as well as K9 Advantix directly to pet specialty retailers and pet specialty Internet sites in March 2010 in order to compete in a rapidly changing business climate, the company reported today.

Bayer also plans to launch a multimillion-dollar national, consumer print advertising campaign to promote veterinary visits as well as a “March Back In” $20 pet owner rebate program to encourage return visits to veterinary clinics. Pet owners are increasingly demanding easier access to flea and tick products, such as Advantage and K9 Advantix, the company reported, and the diversion of these products from the veterinary channel remains a growing issue as consumers continue to change shopping habits.

The company reported that it continues to view veterinarians as “our most important partner in caring for pets” and remains committed to supporting veterinarians and their practices. However, market research shows pet owners intend to increase their purchases of flea and tick treatments at pet specialty stores and websites.

Bayer’s upcoming national campaign includes print ads set to appear in magazines targeted to pet owners. Also in development are point of purchase materials for pet specialty stores for educating pet owners about the importance of veterinary visits, according to the company. <HOME>

Anyone can buy Advantage, Advantix, Frontline or Frontline + at their local pet shop already. I don't see why the vets or anyone else would care. The product is already there...

It's about time. Hopefully other companies like Merial will follow suit.

I do buy my flea treatments on line or in the USA as here in Canada it is a Vet only product I feel pets should be able to be flea free without a trip to the VET.I see friendwho can not afford trips to the Vet for such thing give their pets products that put them at risk of are bad for them and it is not fair to any one to have to try this.I am a breeder and am at my Vets all the time but its the little fella who is suffering :O(
I also wish they would produce and make available a pill I hear tell can
renter a pet sterile rather than a surgery!!!!At least make it available to the SPCA ect to be able to lower over head and adopt pets for less.

If these products are going to be sold to specialty retailers one would assume that the smaller pet retailers who rely on OTC distribution will also need a source. Can we then assume that those of us who have had an OTC relationship with Bayer for years in livestock, poultry and companion animal will be given some consideration for distribution. Please have someone call me on this. John Scheuber, President of VSI 209-545-5100, ext. 2034
