Petsmart to Open Animal Control Shelter Inside Texas Location
Posted: Friday, April 23, 2010, 4:44 p.m., EDT

Petsmart to Open Animal Control Shelter Inside Texas LocationThe City of Fort Worth, Texas, has partnered with Petsmart Charities Inc., to open the first government animal control pet adoption center inside a Petsmart store. The grand opening is set for May 1.

“We are very proud to be part of this effort and we applaud the Fort Worth city leaders and the dedicated city staff for their unwavering commitment to this endeavor,” said Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of Petsmart Charities, a nonprofit organization. “At Petsmart Charities, our goal is to save the lives of pets that don’t have homes. This type of collaboration—one that promotes pet adoptions and reduces euthanasia—is key to meeting that goal.”

The nonprofit is funding 100 percent of the build-out costs for the new center, which will occupy about 1,830 square feet of space that was not being used at the rear of the store.

Petsmart will not charge the city any rent and Fort Worth community leaders are raising funds to cover operational costs.

The satellite shelter, to be staffed by the city, will house up to 50 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at one time. Pets will live at the center until they are adopted. About 25 pets will be adopted from the new shelter location every week, according to Petsmart Charities.

The shelter will feature 10 kennels for adult dogs, four kennels for puppies or small dogs, a cat adoption center that can house up to 24 cats, a play area for dogs awaiting adoption, meet-and-greet areas for prospective adopters and their families and dog and cat isolation areas. The shelter will be open seven days a week.

The May grand opening coincides with the Petsmart Charities Second Chance for Love National Adoption Event, sponsored by Hill’s Science Diet Brand and Petsmart. The event aims to find homes for more than 18,500 pets throughout North America. Dozens of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be available for adoption at this event from Fort Worth Animal Care & Control, as well as other animal welfare groups that collaborate with Petsmart Charities.

The opening will include a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. at 4800 Loop 820 in Fort Worth (Hulen Mall area). Shelter tours, pet adoptions and activities for pets and people will continue until 4 p.m.

Presenters will include Fort Worth Mayor Pro Tem Danny Scarth; Fort Worth community leader Bill Boecker; Petsmart Inc. Executive Chairman Philip Francis; and Petsmart Charities Inc. Executive Director Susana Della Maddalena. <HOME>

I am with a Garland, Texas animal rescue 501c3. I am interested in proposing something like this to the Garland, Texas animal advisory board, and animal control staff. Can you give me any additional information on how to get this started in Garland, Texas (a suburb of Dallas, Texas)? They are a high-kill gassing shelter, and I would love to see more animals find forever homes. Many local rescue groups would be interested in volunteering in this endeavor. Thank you.
