H.H. Backer Associates Inc. reported in mid-July that its Pet Industry Spring Show will return to Atlantic City, N.J., next year and become an all-weekday event, among other changes. The decision was based on buyer feedback, according to the Chicago-based company.
“The decision to return to Atlantic City hinged first and foremost on what buyers wanted,” said Collette Fairchild, trade show director. “Buyers wanted a venue that’s easy to get to and more affordable overall, especially in light of the current economy.”
The 2011 Spring Show is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13, 2011, to Friday, April 15, 2011, at the Atlantic City Convention Center. Previously, the show was scheduled for Friday, April 8, 2011, to Sunday, April 10, 2011, in Baltimore, which is where the show has been held since 2008.
Retailers responding to a survey in May indicated that location is a critical factor when deciding which trade shows to attend and identified Atlantic City as the preferred location for the Backer Spring Show, according to the company.
They also said they’d prefer an all-weekday show if it meant cheaper hotel accommodations. Most room rates in Atlantic City will be less than $100 per night, Fairchild said.
“Atlantic City has worked with us to keep hotel rates, exhibitor expenses and other costs extremely competitive,” she said. “And Atlantic City is even more appealing as a destination than it was four years ago. There are now more direct flights into Atlantic City’s local airport. The city has added more than 2,500 new hotel rooms. There are more shopping, restaurant and entertainment options, too.
“And moving to midweek means better service for group business,” she added.
The Spring Show will feature longer show hours to accommodate buyers’ varying schedules. New show hours are: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 15.
In addition, the dates for the next three Spring Shows, including next year’s, provide at least four weeks between the Spring Show and Global Pet Expo, which is traditionally held in February or March. Exhibitors requested more time between the two industry events, according to Backer. <HOME>
