Hartz Mountain Corp. of Secaucus, N.J., is voluntarily recalling 74,700 bags of its Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs due to salmonella concerns.

The recalled product comes in 8-ounce bags printed with the lot code BZ0969101E and the UPC number 32700-11519. One or more bags within the lot may be contaminated with salmonella, according to the company. No illnesses have been reported.

The treats were imported by Hartz from a Brazilian supplier, Bertin S.A., and distributed to a number of customers in the United States. Regular testing conducted by Bertin prior to shipping did not detect the presence of salmonella, Hartz reported. However, a random sample testing conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration did detect salmonella. Hartz reported that it is aggressively investigating the source of the problem.

Symptoms of salmonella infections include diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain and nausea, according to the company. Dog owners are urged to contact their veterinarian if their pet is exhibiting these symptoms.

Humans can also become infected, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with treats or surfaces exposed to the recalled product. Children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems are particularly susceptible to infection, according to the company.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled treats are urged to discard the product and call Hartz at 1-800-275-1414 for a reimbursement.
