Sergeant’s Obtains Patent for Pest Control Formula

Posted: January 17. 2011, 6:50 p.m., EDT

Sergeant’s Pet Care Products Inc. of Omaha, Neb., reported today that it has acquired the rights to a patented pest-control formula from Sumitomo Chemical Co. of Japan. Sergeant’s Pet Care Products Inc. of Omaha, Neb., reported today that it has acquired the rights to a patented pest-control formula from Sumitomo Chemical Co. of Japan.

The deal allows Sergeant’s to manufacture and sell spot-on pesticide compositions that combine fipronil with an insect growth regulator, such as methoprene or pyriproxyfen. Both fipronil and the insect growth regulator s-methoprene are used in top selling veterinary channel flea and tick product Frontline Plus.

“The license agreement with Sumitomo for its pest controlling formulation is both exciting and important for Sergeant’s,” said Bob Scharf, president and CEO of Sergeant’s. “It will allow us to gain access into a large market that has been dominated by a small number of products.”

Caryn Stichler, vice president of marketing for Sergeant’s, said generic formulations are gaining popularity in the pet market.

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver a trusted, veterinary-recommended product to pet owners that will be available where they shop regularly and at a lower cost than the brand-name products currently available,” Stichler said.

Sergeant’s declined to discuss at this time any information pertaining to product development.

This investigation determined fipronil residues on gloves worn while petting dogs after Frontline application. Frontline contains 9.8% fipronil, which controls fleas and ticks on dogs for at least 30 d. Frontline (1.34 ml) was applied topically on adult household dogs and gloves worn for 5 min during petting were collected 24 hr and 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 w post-Frontline application for fipronil residue determinations using GC/MS. The highest concentration of fipronil (589.3 ' 205.7 ppm) was detected 24 h after Frontline application and was undetectable in the gloves collected at 5 w. Repeated exposure to such contamination can pose human health risks.
