| Quaker parrots are illegal to own in several states in the U.S. |

On May 31, 2011, the governor of New Hampshire, John Lynch, signed HB651 into law, which legalizes the sell and ownership of quaker parrots (Myiopsitta monachus), starting July 30, 2011.
In February 2011, the avian community was surprised to learn that quaker parrots were illegal to own and sell in the state of New Hampshire. By March 2011, legislation had been introduced to legalize quaker parrots, and the bill HB651 was passed by both the New Hampshire House of Representatives and the New Hampshire State Senate.
Quaker parrots are illegal to own in several states, as they are considered a crop pest. Naturalized quaker parrots also cause concern for electrical companies, as the birds like to build nests on the power transformers, which can be a fire hazard.
