Central Garden & Pet brand Kaytee recalled several lots of Kaytee Exact Hand Feeding Formula Baby Birds and Kaytee Exact Hand Feeding Formula Baby Macaw due to high levels of vitamin D, the company reported today.

Baby birds being fed the formula may run the risk of kidney failure when ingesting the product.

An elevated amount of vitamin D was unintentionally added to the recalled products in an isolated mixing batch during the manufacturing process, the company said.

Baby birds that have consumed formula with high vitamin D levels may become weak and inactive and show a lack of appetite, vomiting, increased thirst and increased urine excretion (watery droppings), the company said. Pet owners should stop feeding the affected food immediately and consult with their veterinarian.

Customers who purchased the recalled products can contact Kaytee for to receive a reimbursement.

In response to the recall, Kaytee reviewed its quality control process and took the “necessary steps” to ensure the product will be manufactured to exact specifications, the company said.
