Online retailer Wayfair.com reported today that its shoppers are purchasing more decorative leashes, LED collars and glow-in-the-dark garments in preparation of Halloween this year.
The products help ensure safer and more pet-friendly trick or treating, the Boston-based company stated.
The Spellhound Witch Dog costume from Casual Canine includes a matching hat and a plush broom toy with squeaker. |
Wayfair also noted that its five most popular dog costumes this year are Superhero, Elephant, Lederhosen, Taco and Chef.
“We saw a 43 percent increase in dog costumes sold in 2011 from the prior year and predict even higher sales in 2012,” said Kelly Vail, pet category manager at Wayfair.
Demand also is growing for complementary costumes designed for dogs and children, such as football player and cheerleader outfits or Little Red Riding Hood and Big Bad Wolf attire, the company revealed.
Spending on Halloween pet costumes is expected to hit a record $370 million this year, according to the National Retail Federation.
