Animal Supply Co., one of the largest pet product distributors in the Western United States, announced today that it is expanding into the south-central region with the acquisition of another wholesaler, Lone Star Pet Supply.

Terms of the transaction were not announced, but Lone Star chairman and CEO Dennis Stahl and president Danny Selman became equity partners in Animal Supply, the Federal Way, Wash.-based company reported. Stahl joined Animal Supply’s board of directors and Selman is the Southwest regional president.

The two companies will keep their names in their respective markets.

Animal Supply and Lone Star Pet will cover 20 states under their newly announced merger.

“This acquisition accelerates Animal Supply’s strategy of offering innovative solutions and world-class service to our manufacturer and retail partners on a nationwide basis," said Jeff Sutherland, president of Animal Supply. "Together with Lone Star Pet, we will have over 400 associates working every day to achieve our mission of delivering success to our partners.”

The combined business will cover 20 states, represent more than 300 manufacturers and deliver to more than 4,000 pet stores.

Schertz, Texas-based Lone Star serves Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas. The company stocks about 19,000 items for dogs, cats, birds, tropical fish, reptiles, equine and small animals, according to the company website.

Lone Star was founded in 1952 and acquired by Dennis and Anna Stahl in 1986.

“Combining Lone Star Pet with Animal Supply is a natural fit," Selman said. "Our two companies share a common culture, operating philosophy and progressive vision for the future of the wholesale pet distribution industry. We are eager to roll out Animal Supply’s value-added services, such as PRISM retail store merchandising and Pet Supply Link, to our Lone Star Pet customers.”

Animal Supply provides weekly service to nearly 3,000 customers in 14 Western states, from Bakersfield, Calif., to Barrow, Alaska, to Greeley, Colo. The company has a distribution center in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho and Colorado.
