Whole Foods Adds Exclusive Pet Product Line

Posted: Oct. 2, 2013, 12:40 p.m. EDT

Whole Foods Market on Monday unveiled Whole Paws, a line of 24 products for dogs and cats, ranging from adult dog food and training treats to canned cat food and litter.

The Austin, Texas-based national supermarket chain described the items as "premium value.”

"Premium pet food is the fastest-growing segment in the pet food category,” said Mitch Madoff, the company’s global exclusive brands coordinator. "We know how much our customers care about what they feed their pets, so we’re glad to offer a new line of products with premium ingredients at a value price.”

Canned and dry cat food and dry dog food are among the offerings in the Whole Paws line.
Forty-five percent of dog owners reported buying premium food for their pet in 2012, according to the American Pet Products Association’s latest National Pet Owners Survey. By comparison, 40 percent of cat owners purchased premium food, which the survey defined as "food with more nutrients, less preservatives and metabolized more efficiently than lower grade food.”

The Whole Paws foods are made with chicken, salmon, lamb and other animal proteins. No corn, soy, animal byproducts, artificial colors or artificial preservatives are used, the company stated.

The products are exclusive to Whole Foods’ 322 U.S. stores.

The launch includes the "It’s in the Bag” pet photo contest on the Whole Foods Market Facebook page. The contest runs through Oct. 11.
