Dogs Get Royal Treatment for Halloween

Posted: Oct. 3, 2013, 12:15 p.m. EDT

Princesses, Minions and clowns are sure to show up on doorsteps this Halloween. And that’s just the canine trick-or-treaters.

The online merchant Wayfair.com on Tuesday reported its most popular pet costumes this season. Topping the list are a princess outfit, followed by Minion from the movie "Despicable Me,” a dinosaur and a gangster. The next six are an Ewok costume, a clown, a hippopotamus, Ghost Buster, a lobster and Yoda.

About $330 million is expected to be spent on Halloween pet costumes in the United States this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Pet owners may have been inspired by news of Britain’s royal baby when they chose the princess costume, Boston-based Wayfair stated. Demand is rising for royal dog costumes depicting kings, queens and princes, the company added.

Recent sales and customer browsing habits suggest that dog costumes featuring movie characters are popular as well. Besides Minions, homeowners can expect to see Yoda from "Star Wars” and the Green Lantern, Wayfair noted.
