USDA to Host Webinars on Internet Pet Store Rule

Posted: Oct. 30, 2013, 12:25 p.m. EDT

Four webinars explaining the new definition of what constitutes a pet store under the Animal Welfare Act have been scheduled through Dec. 5.

More animal sellers, including as many as 4,640 dog breeders, 325 cat breeders and 75 rabbit breeders, will be subject to greater federal oversight starting Nov. 18. The rule, approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, requires many breeders and Internet-based businesses engaging in "sight unseen” transactions to comply with Animal Welfare Act guidelines.

The webinars will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. EST on four Thursdays.

Traditional pet stores, sellers of working dogs and most animal rescues and shelters are exempt from the new federal rule.
The schedule:

• Nov. 7: "Am I Regulated Under USDA’s Retail Pet Store Rule?”

• Nov. 14: "How Will USDA Implement the Retail Pet Store Rule?”

• Nov. 21: "What Is USDA’s Inspection Process in a Home?”

• Dec. 5: "How Will USDA Enforce the Retail Pet Store Rule?”

Additional information and webinar registration instructions are available on the USDA Animal Care website.
