Petco reaffirmed its commitment to San Diego today with an announcement that the national pet store chain will consolidate multiple offices into a single headquarters building in the city’s Rancho Bernardo community.
The move from offices in the Miramar and Scripps Ranch areas of San Diego is expected to take place in the third quarter of 2015.
Petco purchased the property at 10850 Via Frontera and expects to start interior construction and remodeling this fall. The 300,000-square-foot headquarters is expected to house more than 650 people.
"We now have a tremendous opportunity to intentionally design a central campus that reflects our values and showcases what we can achieve with the Power of Together,” said Jim Myers, Petco’s CEO.
"San Diego has been our home for decades,” Myers added. "This community has helped us grow, and this new facility gives us the opportunity for continued growth in our hometown.”
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer welcomed Petco’s reinvestment in the city.
"Petco has long been a major local employer in San Diego and supports a wide range of philanthropic and recreational activities in the area,” Faulconer said. "We’re thrilled they’ve renewed their commitment to the city and are creating an innovative workspace that will enhance the wellness of their employees and our community.”
The new headquarters will feature an open layout with "very few closed-door offices,” the company reported. Also planned are pet play areas, employee workout facilities, and the use of natural light and locally sourced, earth-friendly building materials.
Petco will continue to operate a support center in Texas. The 100,000-square-foot office in San Antonio employs about 300 people in areas such as accounting, human resources and risk management.
"As part of our dual support center strategy, our San Diego support center will continue to work hand in hand with our San Antonio support center and our field and store partners across the country,” Myers said.
The company operates more than 1,300 Petco and Unleashed by Petco stores in the United States, Mexico and Puerto Rico as well as nine Pooch Hotels that offer pet day care, boarding and spa services.
Petco will celebrate 50 years in business in 2015.
