Designers Chosen for Tokyo Pet Fashion Show

Pet Fashion Week New York
August 2007

Nearly 20 designers will participate in a dog fashion show in Tokyo orchestrated by the team behind Pet Fashion Week New York, or PFW as it has been shortened by many in the industry.

After attending the first two years of the New York pet fashion event, representatives from Tokyo Broadcasting Systems and Miravision invited organizers to Japan to present a runway show at its annual consumer-oriented New Year Dog Party in January, according to Annemarie Aldrich, marketing and public relations coordinator for PFW. The show at the Tokyo Big Sight arena Jan. 12 to 13, 2008, expects to attract around 40,000 people.

Pet Fashion Week organizers chose eight designers to present demi-couture and avant-garde collections at the Tokyo show that would “explore the combination of personality, creativity and tradition that makes New York City a fashion capital.” Tokyo representatives also picked 10 favorites from the 2006 Pet Fashion Week couture show, bringing the final number on the runway to 18. Their names, many familiar, are below.

“It’s a little more theatrical” in Tokyo, said Jonathan Peters, runway show coordinator for Pet Fashion Week and its Tokyo show.

While the fashion show is designed more for entertainment than business, eight of the designers selected by PFW will also be included in a wholesale buyer reception on the evening of Jan. 12 at Hotel Nikko Tokyo. Open to Japanese and other pet boutique owners, manufacturers and department store buyers, the reception should give manufacturers access to some of Japan’s $10 billion a year pet industry, organizers say. The logistics of putting together an overseas show, however, limited the number of designers that were invited, Peters said. Today at its offices in Rhode Island, he and others were working to ship out items for the fashion showing, carefully cataloging the items and their fabric makeup for customs officials.
