prides itself on redefining aquarium cleaning.
“Now, people can clean their aquariums without fear of ruining their balance,” says Fred Getsinger, president and chief financial officer of Ancient Mariner.
Based in San Jose, Calif., Ancient Mariner provides starter kits, aquarium gravel vacuums, extension tower kits, vacuum accessories and stands and canopies to help with all aquarium cleaning needs.
Getsinger, who has been in the aquarium service industry for more than 15 years and has been a fish hobbyist for most of his life, learned that many aquarium hobbyists were unable to properly care and clean their aquariums.
“Because I love fish, I decided to work at a fish store so I could learn about the industry,” Getsinger says. “It seemed to me that the biggest problem was servicing aquariums.”
Getsinger invented and patented the APGV-100 (Aquarium Power Gravel Vacuum), an aquarium cleaning machine, to help with servicing aquariums and introduced it as a consumer product in March 2006.
“The APGV-100 is the only continuous cleaning machine in the world,” Getsinger says. “I don’t have any competition.”

The APGV-100 filters out dirty water and waste material, and returns clean water back in. The gravel whirls around in a suction tube while separating waste and detoxifying the water. It’s a no mess, no stress answer to a clean aquarium according to the company, and only needs to be used once a month. The cleaning process is safe, easy and maintains the necessary balance. The APGV-100 is a consumer product that can clean up to 100 aquariums, fresh or salt water.
“It cleans all the water in the aquarium,” Getsinger adds. “The fish feel like they’re getting a bath.”
The APGV-400, a commercial unit made of titanium, was introduced in April 2007. This unit can be used on multiple aquariums and can service several aquariums per day and handle daily use.
Customer service is very important to Getsinger as he prides himself on excellent communication. Ancient Mariner continues to serve customers from 15 years ago and has grown through the years.
“I answer every question a customer may have,” Getsinger says. “I care about my product and want to make sure customers are happy.”
Ancient Mariner is currently in the process of designing an APGV-400 230-volt machine that can be used in Europe, Australia and other parts of the world. The product will be ready to ship next year. <HOME>
