Espree Animal Products, known in the pet product industry for its all-natural, aloe vera-based professional-grade grooming products, is expanding with a retail focus and an eye on global expansion.

These are impressive goals for the company, founded in 1989 by Teri Payne-Jones. Hailing from parents who worked in the cosmetic industry and possessing a lifelong love of animals, Payne-Jones combined her two areas of expertise when she founded Espree, located in Grapevine, Texas.

"Our product line has been developed by groomers, veterinarians and professionals in the industry who request products of us to help them with their animals and pets," Payne-Jones says. "The line has grown by taking requests from pet professionals to help their pets."

Espree's product line consists of an extensive line of shampoos and other grooming essentials. New items to their line include aromatherapy sprays and detanglers. International sales make up 25 percent of Espree's business, and the company plans to expand in this area. "The international markets are much younger," says Justin Jones, president of Espree. "There are lots of opportunities to expand in these markets."

Espree executives see a need for distributing high-quality products internationally where the pet industry is still developing.

"We went to InterZoo in Germany, and afterthat show we picked up eight to 10 new distributors," Payne-Jones says. "Since then we've grown to three or four countries in Europe and Asia."

Espree is also in the process of changing how it distributes its products to make them more accessible to retail customers.

"Another area we are trying to grow in is in retail presence," Jones says. "We are trying to focus on getting our product to the end user."
