A harmless solution to keep the pets off furniture
By Leila Lotfi

The PetzOFF product line currently consists of five throws.
Jeremiah Downs, founder of PetzOff is one of many pet owners whose furniture has been destroyed by a beloved pet. When his Australian shepherd, Zioe, chewed a hole through his new sectional, he knew something had to be done to remedy the situation—other than buying a new sofa or getting rid of his pet. Downs’ veterinarian suggested the use of foil to deter Zioe from going near the sofa, and while it did work, it became a nuisance to lay out sheets of foil day in and day out, and it wasn’t appealing to look at. There had to be a better way.

In fall 2007, Downs, along with business partner and chief operating officer Michael Lwin, flew to China in the hopes of marketing their prototype, PetzOff, a throw blanket with a fabric finish on one side and a foil-like material on the other. The throw side of the blanket can be attractively draped over a sofa, chair, etc., and then easily flipped over to keep pets off the furniture.

“PetzOff is a harmless solution people have been looking for and one that pet owners can love,” says Lwin. “They can now protect any piece of furniture that their pets shouldn’t go on.”

PetzOff was introduced to the pet industry at Global Pet Expo in February, and released to the public in June 2008.

“Our goal in creating PetzOff was to offer a product we knew people would use,” reports Lwin. “People spend a lot of money on furniture, so we wanted to protect the furniture without bringing harm to the animals.”

The product line currently consists of five throws:

  • Boutique Earth Tone
  • Boutique Embossed Suede Camel
  • Basic Blue
  • Basic Brown
  • Basic Khaki

“The response has been overwhelming,” adds Lwin. “We’re in 70 stores in the U.S., we already have a distributor in Canada, and we’re working on distributors in Europe and Japan to start product sales.”

PetzOff will unveil its sixth SKU, Embossed Suede Cranberry, at Global Pet Expo in February 2009. Additional plans include counter-top throws, rings for plants, adhesive products and throws for baby cribs.

In addition to passion for their product, the PetzOff team (which includes Stiven Olarte, chief financial officer, Chris Berger, president and chief marketing officer, and Dino Balani, China liaison) prides itself on customer service. It offers a 30-day money back guarantee for anyone not completely satisfied with the product. In the past six months, 1,500 units of PetzOff have been sold.

“We hope to get national brand recognition and get the product line out there,” says Lwin. “There are many uses for our product and there are always people out there looking for a good product.” <HOME>
