Thanks to the continuing growth in pet-product and -boutique markets, pet beds are reaching the pinnacle of popularity. Norman O’Donnell, president of Snoozer Pet Products
, was ahead of his time, being one of the first to bring pet beds to the industry.
Following his retirement as a plant manager, Norman started spending more time with his hunting dogs. He realized he wanted something better for his dogs to come home to other than the traditional doghouse. During his search, he discovered that pet stores didn’t carry any pet beds. To rectify this oversight, he established O’Donnell Industries, better known as Snoozer Pet Products, in 1985 and introduced the Snoozer round rectangular bed to the market.
“The goal in creating the company was to fill a need,” says Brian O’Donnell, vice president of Snoozer and Norman’s son. “Back then, most stores didn’t carry pet beds and they were difficult to find.”

Snoozer has expanded its product line during the past 20 years and now offers four categories of products:
- Mobility Products—lookout car seats, pads and specialty seats
- Beds and Furniture—pillow beds and pet specialty furniture
- Carriers—totes, bags and wheeled carriers
- Accessories—collars, leashes, harnesses and more
Snoozer prides itself on being one of the few manufacturers that still makes everything in the U.S.
“We’re one of the only company’s in the industry that offers a one-year warranty on all products,” O’Donnell notes.
Snoozer unveiled the Lookout Car Seat eight years ago. To date, it remains the most popular product.
“The Lookout Car Seat was the first product developed for an animal in a vehicle,” O’Donnell reports. “We are the first manufacturer of the car seat for dogs and have even done crash-testing with a harness.”

“At one point, I couldn’t even get stores to purchase the product, but now we can’t keep up with the demand,” O’Donnell adds.
Snoozer’s mobility products allow pet owners to take pets on car rides, bike rides, etc., without worrying about car upholstery being ruined or the safety of their dogs. Mobility products can be used in cars, SUVs, bicycles and golf carts.
Snoozer will unveil several new pet beds at Global Pet Expo in February, including a pet bed with memory foam.
“We’re very innovative and always try to come out with new and different products,” O’Donnell says. “We’re a small family-owned company, but we’re very progressive.”
Due to Snoozer’s success in the pet industry, it hopes to branch out to other industries including bicycle, camping and outdoor as a way to continue its growth.
“In the big scheme of all of it, we’ve maintained a good market share for what we do,” O’Donnell reports. “We’re not trying to be the biggest, but I feel we are the best.” <HOME>
