The Good Dog Company

Earth-friendly goods for your best friend
By Leila Lotfi

The Bungee-Bone is The Good Dog Company's flagship product.
Kim Oliver, founder of The Good Dog Company, wanted to create her own business; it was just a matter of what kind. Following a series of events in her life, along with her discovery of the benefits of hemp,, Oliver decided to market hemp pet products.

“Creating The Good Dog Company was a serendipitous moment,” Oliver says. “My love for pets and finding a niche for hemp was a perfect recipe.”

The Bungee-Bone, the company’s flagship product, was inspired by Oliver’s two black Labrador Retrievers, Howard and Ruby. It was Oliver’s goal to create a toy that could withstand the toughest dog. Her result is the Bungee-Bone, an elasticized tug toy made with the heaviest-weight hemp canvas. Due to the product’s popularity among family and friends, Oliver created another toy and developed a line of collars and leashes using the same hemp canvas.

The World Peace Collar is one of many collars from the Hemp Canvas Collection.
“I decided I wanted to remarket hemp to the masses since it’s still very much an early industry.” Oliver reports. “We are reusing sustainable fiber because we’re very environmentally conscientious. More importantly, our products are beautiful for any pet and they’re not harming the environment.”

In Oliver’s research, she found that fabrics made of just one-half of hemp block the sun's UV rays more effectively than other fabrics. She also discovered that hemp is anti-bacterial, resistant to mold and mildew, and is hypoallergenic.

“What’s unique is the stuffing in our toys,” Oliver explains. “We take hemp stock in its raw form, cut it into one-inch lengths and stuff the toy; it’s something pets can digest.”

“We’re growing in a market that’s tough right now and hope to expand our product line,” Oliver adds. “I want to have my logo out there and create a special label for big box stores.”

“Nobody else is really doing hemp products for pets,” Oliver reports. “We’re reusing a plant that would otherwise not be used.” <HOME>
