EU Reduces Trademark Fees
Posted: Wednesday, June 3, 2009
The European Commission revealed plans in March to reduce the fees businesses are required to pay in order to receive trademark protection throughout the European Union. The reduction, which was supposed to take effect May 1, was expected to be about 40 percent.
As it stood at press time, companies seeking EU-wide trademark rights from the Office for the Harmonization for the Internal Market (OHIM) had to pay two separate fees—one for the application and another for the registration. The fees totaled about $2,281 for paper filings and $2,085 for online filings.
The European Commission and EU member states have agreed to abolish the registration fee. As a result, businesses will have to pay only an application fee of about $1,368. Those who file applications online will be charged about $1,173.
The move marks the second fee cut in four years and was made possible by increased efficiency at OHIM, according to officials. <HOME>
