Industry Support Earns Special Award

Posted: August 24, 2011, 1:30 p.m., EDT

In 2005, Ornamental Fish International (OFI) introduced its OFI Award, which it presents to individuals, companies or organizations that make significant contributions to the development of the ornamental aquatic industry.

The identity of the selected laureate is a tightly guarded secret, only shared with the inner decision-making nucleus of the organization. The only things known in advance this year were 1) the announcement and presentation would be made in Singapore during the Aquarama Opening Ceremony; 2) the laureate would be present at the ceremony; and 3) the award was going to a laureate “who has been very important to the ornamental fish industry over the last decades.”

Thus, the audience waited with great expectation for the announcement from Dr. Gerald Bassleer, OFI president, at the end of his opening ceremony address. When it came, it was received with a huge burst of applause and obvious approval by everyone in the room.

This year’s winner, UBM Asia Trade Fairs Pte. Ltd., has been a staunch supporter of the ornamental aquatics industry ever since it acquired ownership of Aquarama, and has always striven to provide the best possible forum for the international trade to meet and do business. In fact, there are numerous trade representatives on the various committees involved in the actual organization of Aquarama.

During the opening ceremony, several speakers referred to the company’s commitment to and recognition of the importance of the aquatics industry. The speakers also stressed that Aquarama is a major business-boosting event, and that UBM’s role as the owner and organizer of the show is therefore also very important for the industry on an international scale.

Receiving the award, a visibly surprised, but delighted, Christopher Eve, senior vice president of UBM Trade Fairs Pte. Ltd. said, “UBM is proud to organize Aquarama, the only trade show in the world that is purely dedicated to the ornamental fish industry. We are gratified that Aquarama plays such an important role in the aquatic industry and are honored to receive this award.”

He also reasserted UBM’s commitment to Aquarama and, thus, the trade, by announcing the dates and venue for Aquarama 2013: May 30 to June 2 in Suntec, Singapore.
