The Perfect Pitch: Hydration

As animals that likely evolved in desert environments, cats have a natural aversion to water. In fact, they drink very little and don’t need much water for proper hydration. The key though, is providing water under the right conditions to encourage adequate drinking habits and prevent serious health issues.

The process of educating consumers on the fundamentals of proper hydration is likely to lead to the topic of automatic waterers, which provide the perfect opportunity to entice a feline into better drinking habits.

Without some form of daily hydration, cats are at greater risk for urinary and kidney ailments. Cats’ ancient ancestors received much of their water by eating vermin and other prey that, themselves, contained more than 60 percent total body water content in their tissues.

Today, cats on dry-food-only diets or limited wet food offerings are at an increased risk of dehydration and the associated problems it causes – unless, of course, they receive a supply of water they find appealing.

The following facts, as presented by holistic veterinarian Dr. Michael Fox in many of his lectures and writings, have recently been discovered about cats’ likes and dislikes, when it comes to drinking water.

  • Cats have an aversion to water with added chlorine, the odor of which discourages them from drinking.
    .
  • Dripping or running water, which degrades chlorine faster and offers fewer opportunities for chemical odors to accumulate is much more attractive to cats.
    .
  • Cats lack the normal thirst mechanism experienced by humans and many other animals. Since, evolutionarily speaking, their water came from meals, they have little desire to drink liquid water.
    .
  • When presented in an attractive, clean, flowing form, cats tend to drink very small amounts of water 10 to 20 times a day.

The easiest way to provide the perfect drinking water for finicky felines is a simple sales pitch away. Point out the latest findings in cat behavior and the clear need for a specific source of clean, flowing water, and everybody wins with automatic waterers. <HOME>
