Marketing Herp Habitat Trends
By Karen Shugart

To spread the word among customers, display items in prominent spaces, recommended Damian Hall, marketing communications manager for Rolf C. Hagen (USA) Corp.

“The best way that we have found to sell displays and terrariums is for retailers to set them up,” Hall said. “What we’ve found is that when people can see these displays set up and merchandised well, they really move off the shelves.”

Display kits can be particularly useful, since they come well suited for beginners and can include vital substrate and lighting. The variety among terrarium kits has expanded, with desert kits, rainforest kits, turtle kits and invertebrate kits among the offerings.

Hall calls invertebrate kits an “emerging area in the reptile industry” and predicted some further species expansion. All are developments that can help both first-time and more-experienced hobbyists.

“You have a higher success rate than if you had [just] a fish tank with a clip-on lightbulb,” Hall stated.

Paul Demas, project manager for Penn Plax Inc., a Hauppauge, N.Y., manufacturer, has urged retailers to set up products for display.
“If you have the room, setting one up in your store will go a long way,” he said.

Retailers also can take advantage of DVDs and online videos to sell their products, said Demas, whose company, Penn-Plax, has posted videos of new products on YouTube.

“You can place those videos on your website to see or play them right in your store,” Demas offered. <HOME>
