Hides Create Healthy Humidity
As the name implies, hides are vital for creating a sense of security within a reptile enclosure. It’s an easy sell, as nearly every species prefers to be hidden from view from time to time.
But even more important that creating a sense of security among a reptile is providing a place where they can cool off and soak up some much needed moisture. Remember this important requirement when encouraging consumers to invest in a hide for their enclosure.
In fact, says Marge Wissman, DVM, DABVP – a Wesley Chapel, Fla.-based mobile avian and exotic veterinarian – dehydration resulting from inadequate opportunities for taking in humid air is one of the No. 1 health dangers to captive reptiles.
Providing a simple hide, which can trap and hold moisture from an enclosure’s substrate, is an easy way to replicate a healthy, humid microclimate. A hide that replicates the species’ natural surroundings is the best way to approach the situation.
“The take-home message really is to learn as much as you can about [the] particular animal’s natural ecology and then try to mimic those conditions as closely as possible,” said Ian Bessell, Ziegler Brothers sales specialist.
All species - even desert dwellers - need a place to cool off and soak up moisture, but the most important group of reptiles requiring hides come from the tropics.
“Humidifying a reptile environment is especially important for rainforest species,” said Jon Coote, director of research & development at T-Rex Products Inc. “As most amphibian species take up moisture through their skin a moist or humid environment for them is usually essential.”
The humidity created by a hide not only ensures adequate internal hydration, it also increases the animal’s wellbeing.
“Humidity has a lot to do with them being able to shed properly and making them more comfortable,” Wissman said. <HOME>
