President Bush has selected Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns to succeed Ann Veneman as secretary of Agriculture, the President announced today.
Raised on a dairy farm in Iowa, Johanns is a Republican attorney who has served two terms as governor.
"I know firsthand his deep commitment to a strong farm economy," said President Bush at a press conference this morning. "He’s been a leader on drought relief in Nebraska and throughout the Midwest. He’s a strong proponent of alternative energy sources, such as ethanol and biodiesel. He’s traveled the world to promote American farm exports."
The nomination, which follows Veneman’s resignation several weeks ago, will require confirmation by the Senate.
"The President selected an outstanding leader today who has a distinguished career in public service and a clear understanding of agriculture and farm policies," said Veneman in a statement congratulating Johanns.
